The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

the Maker of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven,

    He is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

    And he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit;

the holy *catholic Church;

the communion of saints;

the forgiveness of sins;

the resurrection of the body;

and the life everlasting.

*catholic= The Christian church of all times & places

NT Reading: Romans 4:1-12, p. 885

Heidelberg Catechism Lord’s Day 23 (#59-61)

Minister: What good does it do you, however, to believe all this?

People: In Christ I am righteous before God and heir to life everlasting.

Minister: How are you righteous before God?

People: Only by true faith in Jesus Christ. Even though my conscience accuses me of having grievously sinned against all God’s commandments, of never having kept any of them, and of still being inclined toward all evil, nevertheless, without any merit of my own, out of sheer grace, God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I had never sinned nor been a sinner, and as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me. All I need to do is accept this gift with a believing heart.

Minister: Why do you say that through faith alone you are righteous?

People: Not because I please God by the worthiness of my faith.

It is because only Christ’s satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness make me righteous before God, and because I can accept this righteousness and make it mine in no other way than through faith.

The Confession of Sin

Unison: Most Holy and merciful Father, we acknowledge and confess before You our sinful nature, prone to evil and slothful in good, and all our shortcomings and offenses. You alone know how often we have sinned: in wandering from Your ways, in wasting Your gifts, in forgetting Your love. O Lord, have mercy upon us, those who are ashamed and sorry for all that we have done to displease You. Teach us to hate our errors; cleanse us from our secret faults; and forgive our sins, for the sake of Your dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Minister: Hear now the comforting assurance of the grace of God, promised in the Gospel to all who repent and believe: if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Amen.
